Offshore Wind Development

Offshore Wind Development

Offshore wind farm development requires extensive, multi-disciplinary project work from years prior to construction.

This development covers the technical work and discussions required to obtain a suitable grid connection, as well as planning, consenting and environmental studies.  From a technical perspective, pre-FEED work will involve initial technical studies to size and design the initial transmission system and offshore wind collector circuits.

We regularly work as part of offshore wind development teams at the early stages of offshore wind farm projects.  We have been involved in initial work around obtaining the grid connection including analyses of options and discussions with the network operators.  We have also undertaken package management work for electrical systems and cables, as part of the ongoing development of these projects.  We also undertake initial power systems studies for sizing of HV electrical equipment, as well as FEED and detailed power systems studies as the projects progress through the various development stages.

Offshore Wind Development Services

We have a significant track record in all technical aspects of offshore wind development, including power systems studies, electrical design, techno-economic analysis and project development.

Offshore Wind Consultancy

Typical offshore wind project work includes:

  • Concept selection, feasibility studies and pre-FEED activities.
  • Substation design for planning consent and FEED.
  • Full sets of power systems studies for offshore wind farms.
  • Supply chain and procurement activities.

Power System Studies for Offshore Wind Farms

Our extensive and detailed power systems studies service for offshore wind farms includes the following:

  • Load flow and reative power capability study.
  • Sensitivity analysis looking at potentially different configurations including different cable assumptions, 275kV versus 220kV etc
  • Short circuit analysis (including impact of low fault levels & SCR)
  • Preparation of Single Line Diagram (SLD).
  • Energisation and P28 studies in PSCAD.
  • Dynamic stabilities studies (frequency and voltage response, fault ride through, FFCI) both RMS and EMT.
  • Power quality / harmonic studies and filter design.
  • Protection coordination.
  • Preparation of Control and Operational philosophies.

We are currently delivering large packages of offshore wind farm studies for various offshore wind farms in the UK, Ireland and internationally in locations such as South Korea.

Corio Generation (CG) appointed Blake Clough Consulting to lead on the electrical engineering package for the Skerd Rocks offshore wind farm, and to provide engineering support for discussions with EirGrid. In fulfilling this role, Blake Clough has demonstrated strong technical competence for offshore wind farm electrical design, whilst at the same time, showing a good understanding of the developing grid code requirements in Ireland. Blake Clough has provided the necessary leadership within the package to ensure the electrical design is processed in accordance with the developing Grid Code, and with a view to continuously optimising the project LCOE. Blake Clough demonstrates a professional approach when interacting with contractors, is competent to facilitate multi-contractor meetings as well as engaging with the authorities in a professional capacity on behalf of Skerd Rocks
