Bulgaria Battery Storage Facility Tender receives support from Blake Clough

Bulgaria Battery Storage Facility Tender gets support from us here at Blake Clough

On 21 August 2024, the Bulgarian Ministry of Energy opened a tender procedure for National infrastructure for storage of renewable energy (RESTORE) for granting stand-alone battery energy storage system (BESS) tender funded under the EU’s Recovery Resilience Facility.

Blake Clough has been supporting the development of this auction since May 2023 as part of an international consortium.  Blake Clough has taken the role of technical experts for the consultancy support, providing consultancy in areas such as assessment of options for electricity storage capacity, technical design of the auction and analysis and review of the existing electricity networks in Bulgaria.

Bulgaria Battery Storage Facility Tender Aims

The tender aims to provide funding for the construction and implementation of at least 3000MWh of stand alone battery storage.  The integration of this storage is how the Bulgarian Government and their Recovery and Resilience Plan (RRP), plan to accelerate the decarbonisation of Bulgaria’s energy sector.

In 2020 Bulgaria’s National Energy and Climate Change Plan (NECP) set a national target for the share of renewable energy in gross final energy consumption of 27.09% by 2030.  In April 2022 a more ambitions RRP was introduced which included further funding to accelerate the decarbonisation of the energy sector through measures such as tripling power generation from renewables by 2026 and setting ambitious targets for energy storage.

We are pleased to have played our part in the development of this tender, and we look forward to seeing the establishment of new battery storage on the Bulgaria networks, assisting with the increasing uptake of renewable energy for this country.
